Hey, GatherFIRE community!!
A bit about how I got into FIRE
I’m new to GatherFIRE, but also fairly new to the FIRE movement. I only became aware of the FIRE movement about 6 years ago. Before that (8+ years ago, in a not-so-distant past life…) I suddenly found myself strapped with a few thousand dollars in credit card debt and only myself to pay it off…I hated being in debt that seemed impossible at the time to be free of. That’s when I became serious about saving. Every penny I didn’t have to spend, I used to pay toward my credit cards and in less than 2 years I was debt free. Since then, I have made it my mission to only put on my credit card what I can pay off IN-FULL each month. I’m proud to say, that is a goal I have faithfully achieved!
Now, I’m married and my husband and I have 5 children. He made me aware of the FIRE movement and together we are always looking for every possible way to save so we can be financially independent before we’re 50, even with a full house!
What I want to learn more about
- While I do watch what I spend, I want to get better at having a more structured budget (something written and not just in my own mind).
- I would like more information on methods of income that are passive or able to be integrated into an already busy family schedule.
- I want to hear what others out there are doing to reach their FIRE dreams while also having expenses for a large family.
Best!
J.

Welcome to GatherFIRE, and thanks for introducing yourself! We hope that you enjoy our site as we try to come up with new features each month and give back to the FIRE community. We’re just getting the word out about our website to grow our user base and look forward to developing our community.
We’re glad you’re out of debt for the most part and can start saving more. Keep it up! With regard to your spending and budget, maybe some other users will have some ideas on how to track what you’re spending easily. Sometimes it’s hard with all the different types of bills, credit cards, etc… we use now and with your big family. Even more reason to get to early retirement so you can spend more time with them.
Thanks again for joining and starting the discussion!
