FIRE stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. If waiting until you’re older before you can stop working for someone else sounds horrible, this movement might be for you. Many people don’t want to wait on their dreams of traveling, getting outdoors, enjoying more time with their family, or spending more time doing what they love until they are able to collect Social Security or not rely on an employer for their financial security. They want to save as much as they can to build up their nest egg now to retire early so they can live free!
The FIRE movement is for everyone who wants to take their early retirement seriously and for those who want to maintain their lifestyle in retirement — considering ongoing economic changes.
Before GatherFIRE launched in 2023, the FIRE movement wasn’t centralized or organized in a particular way. The movement was spoken about in random chat rooms and social media groups, but finally got the attention of media, finance channels, websites, and financial coaches who would try to attract users and work on selling them a particular service or product. Mainly, the movement existed in that people were individually working to save +50% of their income, pay down their debts, and reduce their monthly spending to get to a point where they could build up their nest egg and retire early.
Different FIRE Objectives
The endgame for FIRE success is different for everyone, but some have gathered to form groups who want to:
- work full-time, but doing only something they love,
- completely retire from working and just travel, volunteer, enjoy great food, etc., or
- work part-time or in a job that provides benefits (healthcare, dental, etc).
How do you Get to FIRE?
Many sites and advisors will tell you that your income has to be massive or that you need a certain amount of money before you retire…. it really depends on how you want to live now, what your debt looks like, and what investments you make (and how they turn out). That’s all up to you, but what we’ve done at GatherFIRE is build up a supportive community so that people who are seriously working on their FIRE goals can connect and help one another.
